I am curious, how is everyone estimating travel time. I have some ideas I want to share with the community but first I wanted everyone’s opinion.

  1. How do you estimate travel time?
  2. Do you let the crew see the hours or do you remove them from the visits? How?
  3. When doing ticket review, How do you compare estimated vs actual hours? What columns to you use?

Year one, we deducted travel time from the maintenance crews on the schedule by 20%. But this was with legacy contracts that didn’t have travel estimated in them. Plus travel time changes when we reroute for better efficiency or new/lost contracts. This year we decided to view the travel time as part of our labor cost, then schedule at least 70% of the available man hours in the route. We then show the crews all their hours. I take 30% of their hours minus load time or other shop time and put it into an internal category of drive time. All other time gets divided. That time I show to the crews so we can problem solve for it. This is year two, so we’ll see how this goes.
