@MSmith We used both ways to create barcode.
For bulk materials stored in the yard, such as mulch, soil and ex, we created a barcode for it. (barcode index card, see blow and hanging in the truck).
For chemicals, we use the barcode on the container or bags. Some chemical does not use the format code 39, code 128, UPC-A or EAN-13. but it still works well, which surprised me.

Have you checked your App version? The Aspire mobile needs to be the latest version.
We use iPhone and iPad, it works well.
